Big brands and Bo-Jo electrify the streets
"One of the main worries for drivers of electric cars is range anxiety - that feeling of sheer panic when you realise your ecologically responsible vehicle is running low on charge and you’re nowhere near an electrical socket - but Boris Johnson, the colourful mayor of London hopes to change all that.
The project, Source London, plans to deliver at least 1,300 electric car charging points across London by 2013. The plan is for London to have more electric charging stations than petrol stations. At the moment, there are 150 charging stations that are already operating under this scheme.
It’s all part of Bo-Jo’s dream to make London the electric car capital of Europe and, not surprisingly, Nissan and Mitsubishi are delighted.
With Mitsubishi currently keenly promoting the i-MiEV and Nissan telling the world about their all-electric LEAF, both Japanese automakers are hoping that the mayor’s ambitious plan will make their zero-emission runarounds more attractive to reluctant buyers.
Both brands have market leader ambitions in the soon-to-be-competitive EV market so anything that makes life easier for motorists with a green conscience but no desire to be stuck in a London snarl with no power should be good for them.
Nissan has upped the ante in the battle of the electric cars with the offer of free access to Source London charging points for the first 12 months for every LEAF driver within a 40-mile radius of London. This will save LEAF-driving Londoners paying a £100 annual subscription fee for the service.
At this stage, Mitsubishi hasn’t made a similar pledge but the car is available in the UK with a lead-time of just 10 days and they’re hoping that the MiEV’s interior bespoke accessory pack will also attract buyers.
As an additional sweetener, electric vehicles are exempt from London’s unpopular congestion charge."
