Nissan LEAF number one hits Canadian roads

"Whether you love the idea of electric cars or are terrified of being stuck in traffic with a dead ride, they are now here for real. Ottawa, Ont. resident Ricardo Borba was the first person in Canada to open his wallet and put a deposit on Nissan's LEAF electric car and today he became the first to take possession of one in the country.

The 44 year old is an electrical engineer and software guy with IBM and figures the LEAF will be the perfect choice as his family's primary wheels.

"My family and I were starting to look for a new car last year when the Deepwater Horizon oil spill occurred and prompted us to think about alternatives to gas-powered vehicles," said Borba. "We considered several options and the Nissan LEAF was the one that best fits our needs. It's all-electric and looks and drives just like a regular car with five seats, ample cargo space and loaded with high-tech features. It's smooth, quiet and has incredible acceleration. In other words, it's fun to drive!"

The delivery was held at Hunt Club Nissan as part of Nissan's Drive Electric Tour, which is intended to create some buzz by getting consumers behind the wheel. Nissan's forecasters are predicting this tour which visits 27 dealers should result in the sale of 600 LEAFs (LEAVES?) by the end of 2012.

With a starting price of $38,395 for the LEAF as opposed to Nissan's similarly packaged Versa that starts at just $14,678 the comparison just begs to be made. For the price of a LEAF, a family could buy 2 Versas and have $9,039 left over. Using Nissan's advertised 5.7 L/100 km fuel economy for the Versa, one could put fuel in BOTH of those Versas for 25,000 kilometres at today's gas prices and still have more than $5-grand left to take the kids to Disney World for a week.

No discussion about electric vehicles would be complete without the mention of "range anxiety" or the fear of being left stranded by a dead battery. The environmentally conscious driver could conceivably have a range of over 800 kilometers from the Versa's 50 litre tank while Nissan advertised the range of the LEAF on a single charge as up to 160 kilometres. Of course both of those numbers may vary. The LEAF could conceivably drop to as little as 100 kilometres in stop and go traffic.

For some people, being perceived as green is obviously more important than being perceived as financially sane."
