Sunderland Nissan Leaf could be forced by EU law
"A North East MEP is warning silent electric cars are a serious danger to blind and partially sighted people.
As the technology develops with the Nissan Leaf at the Sunderland plant, there's a need to look at the impact on our region's roads.

Lib Dem MEP Fiona Hall's been meeting with the Guide Dogs Association in Newcastle to find out about the issue.
She says vehicle standards are the responsibility of EU law and wants mandatory noise systems for electric cars to support visually impaired people.
A new European law may be required to protect blind people from electric cars according to Fiona.
Alternatives to petrol and diesel are under development, including the Nissan Leaf here in Sunderland, but the vehicles are nearly silent when in motion.

For people with a sight impairment it means a new fear of local roads, and the Guide Dogs Association in Newcastle believe noise systems should be fitted as standard.
Lib Dem MEP, Fiona Hall, says that would mean EU legislation to create a standard across Europe."
