It’s not every day that buying a new car creates headlines.
But it’s not every day you become the first private customer in Portugal to buy a Nissan LEAF.
All Filipe wanted was a new car.
But, unwittingly, that simple decision has turned into a little piece of automotive history. Filipe – who lives in Lisbon l – has become the first person in his country to buy a Nissan LEAF: together, Filipe and his Nissan LEAF have started the zero emission revolution in Portugal.
“Privately, I am quite proud,” he said. “Ecology is important to me and I do anything in my power to contribute to a better future. Buying the Nissan LEAF is totally in tune with this goal.”
Filipe, who used to work in civil aviation but has now retired, cites Nissan LEAF’s economy, low maintenance requirements and, of course, its zero emissions as reasons why he was keen to go electric.
The LEAF is his first Nissan and there’s a pleasing symmetry about the choice.
“I was born in 1947… the very year that Nissan made its first electric vehicle. But it’s taken both of us 63 years before the technology was perfected to the point where I could own a practical zero emission vehicle.”
In a typical day, Filipe reckons to cover about 50 to 60 kms behind the wheel: distances well within the range of Nissan LEAF.
Recharging won’t be a problem. “I can charge it at home without worry and there’s a public charging station just 16kms from where I live. Besides, the centre of Lisbon has plenty of places to plug it in,” said Filipe.
It’s a long way from his first car, an original Mini Cooper. “I must admit when I was young I did enjoy driving fast, but over the years I’ve calmed down. I am far more concerned about the environment today. And that makes the Nissan LEAF a totally rational choice.”
