"Nissan LEAF customers who’ve got Nissan LEAF EVs on order received an e-mail from the car-maker Saturday that the estimated delivery date on their on-line “My Account” page had been changed to “pending.”
The succinct e-mail stated that as “a consequence of the [March 11) earthquake and tsunami, a delay in the scheduled delivery date of your Nissan LEAF™ is unavoidable. We will refresh your 'my account' page with delivery updates as they become available."
Since the earthquake, Japan has lost more than 10 percent of its electrical generating capacity. Thousands of businesses and suppliers to automakers have been damaged, destroyed and/or forced to halt operations because of power shortages. This might be one of the few times where Nissan LEAF customers can say that they understand the reason behind the delay. Of course there will be complaints, as this will be another inconvenience for customers, but waiting on a automobile a little longer is nothing compared to the turmoil and hardships Japan is going through at the moment.
It is uncertain just how many customers the delays will affect. More than likely the unspecified delays will affect customers who placed orders with Nissan dealers in the U.S., as the company only delivered a few hundred of the vehicles before the dual disasters hit the northeastern sector of Japan.
In that same e-mail to Nissan LEAF customers, Nissan North America stated that it donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross for its Japan disaster relief work. The company also said that it would match each customer's donations made though a Nissan donation site. Nissan will match up to a total of $500,000 in funds."
