"Nissan has once again partnered up with another company. This time around, the car company has teamed up with GE and signed a 2-year research collaboration to speed up the development of reliable charging infrastructure to fuel mass market adoption of electric vehicles.
Both companies have identified two key focal points for their research efforts – how to integrate EV charging with homes and buildings, and how charging infrastructure fits with the electrical grid once millions of EVs hit the road.
Nissan and GE’s research & development agreement will ultimately increase the adoption of electric vehicles like the Nissan LEAF.
There are currently a few projects around the two focus areas underway. One project has researchers from the companies are studying how EVs like Nissan LEAF can be incorporated into GE’s concept for a Smart Home. Another study, has researchers aggregating usage data with sophisticated simulation and
modeling experiments, to analyze the effect millions of electric vehicles could have on the electrical distribution system.
“Connections like this research partnership with GE reinforce Nissan’s commitment to bring zero emission mobility to the mass market,” said Carla Bailo, senior vice president, Research and Development, Nissan Americas.
“GE’s broad expertise with energy networks will help Nissan create better conditions in the market for electric cars like Nissan LEAF, and add value for our customers both now and in the future.”
Nissan researchers are studying the use of the two-way power flow between the vehicle and the home, via its CHAdeMO quick charging port, as a method to reduce the home’s consumption from the grid during peak periods, or to utilize the vehicle for emergency backup power.
According to Brighter Energy,GE researchers have programs under way to understand how these systems, in tandem with the utility, could be used to meet vehicle charging needs without over-stressing the grid.
Nissan Technical Center North America, in Farmington Hills, Mich., will lead the company’s efforts, which includes the integration of vehicle-to-home charging technology, with support from the Nissan Advanced Technology Center in Japan."
